In the eastern part of the Dordognevalley is a region situated with the exotic name Xaintrie, a name which refers to a certain Saint Trie, a missionary whose existance is very disputable. But there is no doubt for the Xaintrie people , he was here, and maybe he is still here.

The thinly populated region on the border of the Cantal, was in earlier times inhabited by Celts and nowadays in principal by less exotic farmers.

The latter not for nothing, because of the fertility of the bottom combinated with the amount of natural sources, owing to the volcanic origin of this area.

You can find as well traces of ancien vineyards, disapeared due to the phylloxera epidemic of 1888. But 100 years later debuted succesful the red 'Mille et Une Pierre' and a few years ago the white 'Vin Paillé' wines. Watch out for it!

At the time between the beginning of the Fedal system and the end of the 100 years war, a chain of castels were built on a distance of sight, sometimes connected by subterranean passages with lenghts of many kilometers. A must to visit: Les Tours de Merle.
